Dr. Raymond Moody

One of the most well known researchers on Near Death Experiences is Dr. Raymond Moody who has spent years studying and writing on the topic of NDE's.

M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia, 1976
Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Virginia, 1969
M.A. in philosophy from the University of Virginia, 1967
B.A. with Honors in philosophy from the University of Virginia, 1966

Dr. Raymond Moody is credited with coining the phrase “Near Death Experience”
based on the work he did researching 150 people that claimed to have died and
returned to life. Additionally, he is credited with the nine most common traits
experienced when a person has had a near death experience. Not all of the subjects
spoke of each item on the list but the consensus from his study was that people
experienced from two to six of the following.

1. hearing sounds such as buzzing
2. a feeling of peace and painlessness
3. having an out-of-body experience
4. a feeling of traveling through a tunnel
5. a feeling of rising into the heavens
6. seeing people, often dead relatives
7. meeting a spiritual being such as God
8. seeing a review of one's life
9. feeling a reluctance to return to life

Dr. Moody has several books of interest on the subject of NDE. Life After Life was
his best known book where he discusses the phenomenon from a clinical point of
view without the religious undertones.

Dr. Raymond Moody discusses some of his latest work in this video on researching Near Death Experiences and Shared Death Experience in an interview with Paul Perry.
